'Grand' Trivia: Before the official name of the river was the Colorado River, it was called the 'Grand' River (as in Grand Junction and Grand Mesa). The Rio Grande won the 'Grand' naming and the Rio Grande is the longer river but the Colorado River has a bigger volume. Both sources start in the State of Colorado. The Rio Grande empties into the Gulf of Mexico, on the Atlantic side of the Great Divide. The Colorado River empties into the Gulf of California, on the Pacific side of the Great Divide.
